You have made it this far, and whether you recall being courageous in the past or not, you have been! You are likely more courageous than you give yourself credit for. Some days, it takes courage just to get out of bed. You’ve gotten through tough times in the past, and your courage will see you through in the future.

On a scale of 1–10, 10 being highest, how would you rate your courage? How will you increase your happiness by using your courage and valuing the courage of others?

DAY 16

HONESTY

“Plenty of people miss their share of happiness, not because they never found it, but because they didn’t stop to enjoy it”

— WILLIAM FEATHER

HONESTY and the related quality of sincerity are foundational to happiness. Honesty builds a good reputation for us and helps us avoid the drama and conflict that result from deceit.

Candidly consider the times in the past when you were dishonest or insincere. How does that make you feel?

There are several reasons that people are dishonest. Oftentimes, it’s because they think they would be embarrassed by the truth—they are afraid of what people would think of them if they knew the truth about them. One of the fastest ways to eliminate that type of dishonesty from your life is to decide to own your story. That means choosing to be—and accept—your delightfully flawed self.

Most people waste the priceless time they’re granted in this life trying to be acceptable, to fit in. Rather than value their own unique combination of assets, many people aspire to be like someone else. Actors want to be “the next Tom Cruise,” performers want to be the next “Beyonce,” authors strive to be “the next J.K. Rowling,” and millions of followers want to be like the Kardashians. There is nothing wrong with aspiring to greatness, so long as you pursue your own unique brand of greatness.

You have something that all those famous people and all those “wannabes” don’t have. You may not know what it is yet; sadly, lots of people live most of the years of their lives without knowing what it is. The good news is that if you don’t yet know, you can discover it. If you know it, you can hone it. And once you do that, you will have everything you need to fulfill the purpose for which you were born, and to enjoy all that accompanies it, including authentic happiness.

So what is it that you have that the celebrities, athletes, and success icons don’t have? Your story—and the lessons you’ve mined from it. You are the world’s foremost expert on YOU and your story. You are the world’s foremost expert on the experiences you’ve lived through and the lessons you’ve learned as a result of those experiences—especially the painful experiences that you successfully survived.

The secret to happiness is deciding to never again be ashamed of yourself or of what you’ve been through, what was done to you, what you’ve done, or any of the other experiences of your past. That was yesterday.
